Rediscovery, Inc. Expands Successful YouthHarbors Program With New Everett High School Site

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwire - Apr 13, 2011) - Rediscovery, Inc. today announced the expansion of its successful YouthHarbors program with the opening of a second site at Everett High School. YouthHarbors works with homeless, unaccompanied high school students to secure stable housing and help them continue their journey to being successful adults. In addition to housing, YouthHarbors works with students to secure ample food, clothing, help finding part-time work, and life skills to ensure that they are able to graduate high school. This second YouthHarbors program is being funded in part by the generosity of the Highland Street Foundation, and builds on Rediscovery's success with its initial program at Malden High School.

"It is imperative that we prepare these youth for education, work, and life," said Blake Jordan, Executive Director of Highland Street Foundation. "Promising programs like YouthHarbors face increased pressure from the economic downturn and related state budget cuts. However, with sufficient support, Rediscovery's YouthHarbors program, and others like it, could become a national model for how we work with this population."

"The need for a program like YouthHarbors is growing monthly among our young adults. The partnership between Everett High and YouthHarbors is a win, win, win situation. YouthHarbors and Everett High School will collaborate to give these young adults the opportunity, support system, and tools to survive, stay in school and become productive citizens. The student, the school and society will all benefit from the success of this collaboration," said Everett High School Principal Louis Baldi.

According to data collected by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, there were 5,920 homeless, unaccompanied high school students in 2009. Through its work with this underserved yet critical population, Rediscovery, Inc. and programs like YouthHarbors make an immediate and positive impact on both the individuals and communities they serve. Key accomplishments of Rediscovery, Inc. since its inception in 2001:

  • 72% of youth have either received a high school diploma or GED or are on track to do so before leaving care, compared with 33% average among youth aging out of foster care
  • 38% of youth are pursuing post-secondary education
  • 96% of youth have gained employment experience while in our program, compared with 31% average among foster care youth
  • 97% of youth are in permanent housing after leaving our program

YouthHarbors Malden High outcomes at the end of last school year were:

  • 96% had either graduated or were on track to graduate

Rediscovery CEO Danielle Ferrier, states, "Without programs like YouthHarbors we will see more kids drop out of high school, become pregnant, incarcerated, or die. Additionally, more of these kids will require life-long government assistance unless they are able to graduate high school and continue on to vocational programs or higher education. YouthHarbors fosters self-sufficiency to a dramatically underserved population which in turn benefits the entire community."
