March 30, 2011 09:17 ET Report That Retail and Science Most Popular Amongst Young Jobseekers

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 30, 2011) - Jobs in retail and science are amongst the most sought after by 16 to 24 year olds, according to a new study by leading UK job board,

As well as confirming the popularity of apprenticeships and graduate roles with young jobseekers, the research, based on February 2011 job application data, also revealed the sectors in which 16 to 24 year olds are most likely to seek work.

Retail was the most popular sector for jobs with all 16 to 24 year old jobseekers in February, whilst for young graduates, Scientific, Marketing and Media jobs were most sought after.

Mark Rhodes, Head of Marketing at, commented by saying "The popularity of retail amongst young job seekers not only reflects the buoyancy of the sector, but also the flexibility it can offer in terms of accommodating other activities, like studying, and even other part-time jobs."

At the other end of the scale, it is the more traditional areas of Transport & Logistics, Construction, Manufacturing and Automotive that are amongst the least popular choices for young jobseekers.

Rhodes continued by saying "The good news is that we appear to be producing a generation of budding scientists, and our own figures show new opportunities in science up by more than 50% since this time last year. "Less positive, however, is the relative unpopularity of more traditional areas of work, like Manufacturing and Construction, both of which are now showing gradual signs of recovery after the tough economic climate of the last two years."

This sign of recovery is of course great news for London jobs, as construction was hit especially hard in the capital. received a total of 2.2 million applications during February 2011, some 743,445 came from jobseekers aged between 16 and 24 years old.
