Reeves College Participates in Inaugural Toasty Toes Sock Drive by United Way

Staff and Students Raise Nearly 400 Pairs of Socks for Toasty Toes!

LETHBRIDGE, AB--(Marketwired - October 13, 2015) - Canadian winters are notoriously harsh and with at least 30,000 Canadians homeless on any given night, it is imperative that the community does what it can to help local shelters stock and equip their facilities with the necessary supplies to support those who seek refuge this winter.

Last month, Reeves College's Lethbridge campus took part in the Toasty Toes Sock Drive - a donation campaign conceptualized by the United Way and the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors - collecting nearly 400 pairs of socks in just a few short days, becoming one of the biggest donors for the clothing drive.

Surprisingly, socks are one of the most needed yet least donated items at shelters. According to Jordan Hamilton, a spokesperson for the Calgary Drop-In Rehab Centre, many homeless Calgarians and bottle-pickers walk over 26 kilometers a day in inadequate footwear and dirty socks. This type of prolonged exposure to moisture combined with long periods of walking can lead to higher risks of foot injuries and disorders such as sores, blisters, infections, callouses, frostbite, and more, all of which can ultimately cause chronic back pain as well.

"We're always looking for opportunities to get involved in the communities we serve," said Penni Kiss, Campus Director of Reeves College's Lethbridge campus. "Our efforts to enhance the local community will not only help those in need, but also provide students with a positive learning experience."

In the past, students have had a chance to team up with local non-profit organizations to make a positive contribution in the community. Student projects include assisting various charitable organizations such as those dealing with poverty and homelessness and working with organizations that encourage positive social change.

All items collected for United Way's Toasty Toes Socks Drive will be donated to Streets Alive Mission, Wood's Homes, YWCA's Harbour House, SASHA House, Interfaith Food Bank Society, and the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre.
