Reflect Scientific Donates Advanced Freezer to Hard-Hit Research Lab

OREM, UT--(Marketwire - Jun 20, 2012) - Reflect Scientific, Inc. (OTCBB: RSCF), a provider of diverse products and services for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and transportation industries, announced the company has offered a Cryometrix T-150 ULT Freezer to Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center at McLean Hospital.

When the management team at Reflect Scientific read about the freezer failure at the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center at the McLean Hospital, they were moved to do something about it.

CEO Kim Boyce said, "Being scientists ourselves, all of us at Reflect Scientific can relate to the terrible tragedy of such a loss. We know what a setback like this can mean to research efforts. Our state-of-the-art freezers can prevent such devastating losses."

While it may take years to replace the priceless brain-tissue samples that were lost at the lab, Reflect Scientific intends to make sure that no harm comes to new samples by donating one of their Cryometrix T-150 ultra-low-temperature liquid-nitrogen freezers to the lab.

Advanced technology fits laboratory needs
Part of what made the situation so tragic was the sheer volume of material that was stored in the freezer at the McLean Hospital. This represented years of donations from patients with very specific conditions. Particularly hard-hit was autism research as many of the damaged samples were for those studies.

However, the Cryometrix freezer being donated by Reflect Scientific will easily accommodate such a large number of samples with 21 cubic ft. / 600 liters of storage volume. Moreover, the company's proprietary CoLD® technologies will help protect the new samples with temperature uniformity of ± 3°C.

The T-150 is also highly reliable with redundant circuits that have delivered over 1.5 million operational hours with zero unit downtime. The unique liquid-nitrogen system will also keep samples frozen properly more than 48 hours if power is lost -- versus a few hours with traditional freezers. User security features provide an additional level of reliability.

But the T-150 offers more than sample security. Because it uses liquid nitrogen, the Brain Tissue Resource Center will also enjoy a number of benefits over compressor-based freezers:

  • Dramatically reduces energy consumption -- up to 90% because there's no motorized compressor
  • Eliminates related cost of air-conditioning (compressors throw off major heat)
  • Lowers maintenance costs by eliminating moving parts
  • Up to 5 times greater payload capacity per unit area of floor space
  • Significant overall reduction in net operating expenses
  • Temperature uniformity and no icy build-up that can damage tissue samples

Liquid nitrogen or "LN2" used by the CoLD® platform for applications involving cryogenic freezing and cold chain management. Nitrogen is an abundant, renewable, environmentally safe material that comprises 79% of the air we breathe. The U.S. spends 12% of its national energy budget on commercial cooling and refrigeration, so many billions of dollars in savings could be realized with greater adoption of Reflect's LN2 cooling technologies.
