Regent Park Community Welcomes FreshCo

Sobeys Ontario Opens First FreshCo in Toronto

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 15, 2010) - Fresh local produce, low prices and fewer compromises are now available at discount grocery in Toronto. Today Sobeys Ontario, together with representatives from Toronto Community Housing, the Regent Park Community Health Centre and community leaders, officially welcomed customers at the newest addition to the FreshCo family at Parliament and Dundas.

Offering the community a larger selection of quality products in a refreshingly different, modern and clean environment, FreshCo is not typical of discount grocery stores. FreshCo is discount done right.

"We are pleased to continue to expand the FreshCo brand and enter the Toronto market place," said Rob Adams, General Manager, FreshCo. "Here at our newest location in Regent Park, we will offer customers the freshest merchandise at the lowest price with an expanded selection of meats, produce, fresh baked goods delivered daily and low prices on favourite brands."

Located at 325 Parliament Street, FreshCo is part of the first phase of the Regent Park revitalization project. This location is the first new construction for the FreshCo brand and has created over 100 new full and part-time positions in the community.

"Revitalization not only strives for better quality housing, it stimulates local economies by attracting businesses that create jobs for residents," says Keiko Nakamura, Chief Executive Officer for Toronto Community Housing. "The new Sobeys' FreshCo in Regent Park is an example of this approach, and we are proud that Sobeys has chosen to be part of this community."

Understanding that each community is unique, FreshCo stores offer an international assortment of specialty products tailored to reflect the community in which they operate. As well, there is a selection of special dietary and health conscious items such as Halal, gluten and lactose-free products, which are not traditionally associated with discount food retailers.

In addition to being sensitive to community needs, the Parliament and Dundas FreshCo is sensitive to environmental needs and is located in a building which has been designed to achieve a LEED® Gold Certification Standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard as established by the Canada Green Building Council. The construction and design on the store has incorporated environmentally sensitive features including:

  • Water conservation features including electronic water faucets;
  • Energy efficient lighting for in-store lighting, fridge/freezer cases and signage;
  • Recycling and composting processes to handle in-store waste; and
  • North America's first living wall in a grocery store will be constructed early in the New Year. Composed of lush plants, the living wall will help to filter the air and remove pollutants.

Launched in May 2010, FreshCo has 27 locations across Ontario which are operated by a dedicated team of franchisees and Store Operators who are committed to their local communities. FreshCo is a bold new step forward in discount food retailing and demonstrates Sobeys Inc.'s commitment to evolving our business to best meet the needs of customers. More information on FreshCo and the new store locations is available at
