REGINA BENTLEY WORKERS JOIN SEIU CANADA

First of six targeted Saskatchewan Central Park Lodges organized Attention: Business/Financial Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor REGINA/SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - March 14, 2005) - REGINA - Workers at the Bentley on Hillside retirement home in Regina have chose to join the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Canada.

The Saskatchewan Labour Board granted the certification last week after verifying that a majority of the workers at the facility support the move to bargain collectively with their employer.

"We are very please to welcome the Bentley employees to our union," says Sharleen Stewart, International Canadian Vice-President with SEIU. "We look forward to working with them to improve their working lives and their ability to care for the residents."

The 23 employees work as cooks, housekeepers, servers, custodians and clerical staff.

"We will undertake a survey of our new members to determine what their bargaining priorities are," says SEIU Local 299 President Barbara Cape, whose local the new members will belong. "We will then start working towards their first collective agreement."

The Bentley on Hillside is the first Central Park Lodges (CPL) workplace to certify of six SEIU targeted in a high profile, province-wide organizing drive launched last summer. A vote at another CPL home is taking place this week.

"The workers told us their main reasons joining SEIU were to ensure fairness and equity in their workplace," says Connie Jattansingh, a Member Organizer with SEIU Local 299. "Wages and sick-leave were other key concerns."

SEIU Canada represents 93,000 workers from coast to coast, the majority of whom work in health-care.
