Registered Nurses (RNs) Use iPhone to Efficiently Look Up, Confirm Comprehensive Nursing Protocols With New RN Pocket Guide™ App From Informed Publishing and App Store's Avatron Publishing

New App Is Based on Informed's Acclaimed RN Pocket Guide™; Signals Informed's App Store Debut -- 10 More Guides to Follow

TIGARD, OR and VANCOUVER, WA--(Marketwire - August 4, 2009) - Nurses looking for another tool to save critical time on the job should reach for their iPhones, according to Chris Barnes, CEO of Informed Publishing.

"Nurses have long used pocket reference guides to confirm dosages, administer medications and make treatment decisions," Barnes said. Now, however, nurses who download the recently released RN Pocket Guide™ app onto their iPhones will be able to quickly access nearly 200 pages of standard and advanced nursing procedures on their handhelds. The app gives nurses and nursing students a convenient tool that makes it even easier to find and use essential medical information.

The new RN app is based on Informed Publishing's RN Pocket Guide™, which is used by millions of nurses and widely considered the industry's essential pocket reference guide.

Informed has partnered with App Store publisher Avatron® Publishing to adapt the RN Pocket Guide for the iPhone and iPod touch. Avatron Publishing is a division of Avatron Software, which created the widely downloaded Air Sharing® file-sharing platform for the Apple devices.

Nurses who use the RN Pocket Guide app view and navigate pages with Avatron's Air PDF™ engine. The app includes page thumbnails, a scrollbar, go-to-page field, hierarchical table of contents and custom bookmarks that allow nurses to quickly return to their most-needed pages.

The app's text and illustrations help nurses assess various conditions, including cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, pediatric, OB, GI/GU and mental health ailments. The app also includes reference information on drugs, infusions, laboratory values, blood products, calculations, PO, SQ, IM and IO administration procedures, and handy features such as a pain-assessment chart and Spanish translations.

The RN Pocket Guide app is available in the App Store's medical category for $19.99, which includes unlimited phone and email support.

"We believe this is the most thorough and user-friendly nursing app available -- with unmatched support," Barnes said. "The feedback we get from nurses is crucial to our success, so when nurses tell us what matters most to them, we listen."

The print RN Pocket Guide from Informed is used throughout the nursing profession on the job and in the classroom.

"What I like best about the RN Pocket Guide is that it is user-friendly," said Carol K. Libonati, a clinical instructor of nursing. "I find it to be a handy reference for medical assessments, interventions, lab work and meds, and it is compact enough to take into a clinical setting."

For more than 20 years, Informed's pocket guides have set the industry standard for delivering critical information in pocket-sized format, with more than three million pocket guides in print.

"Since 1986, first responders have trusted us to deliver the most reliable content in the most convenient package possible," Barnes said. "This app gives nurses a powerful tool that they can use anywhere and at any stage in their career."

The company's partnership with Avatron Publishing to develop the RN app signals Informed's App Store debut. In the coming weeks, Avatron will adapt and release Informed Publishing's entire line of core titles for nurses and medical professionals, including the Emergency and Critical Care Pocket Guide™, EMS Field Guide® BLS Edition™, EMS Field Guide® ALS Edition™ and HICS Hospital Incident Command System Field Guide™.

"For us, the RN app really signals our maiden voyage as a publisher of high-quality content from leading producers and the broadening of our development scope beyond productivity," said Dave Howell, the founder and CEO of Avatron Software and a former Apple software engineering manager. "And we're thrilled to be working with such a respected name in the medical-publishing world."
