Reid's Heritage Homes Continues to Make Great Strides in Net Zero Construction

GUELPH, ON--(Marketwired - February 29, 2016) - In 2013, Reid's Heritage Homes was selected to participate in a national demonstration project to prove that Net Zero Energy (NZE) homes could be built on a community-level scale. The goal was to make NZE homes-which produce as much energy as they consume on an annual basis-fully accessible and affordable to all Canadians using products and technology that are readily available to the average builder.

Overall, five builders were selected to participate in the national project that would see the construction of at least 25 NZE homes in four provinces-Nova Scotia, Québec, Alberta, and Ontario. This total would almost double the amount of NZE homes currently in Canada. The project is funded in part by the ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII), with contributions from each participating builder, industry suppliers and Owens Corning Canada.

Since embarking on the journey to net zero energy, Reid's Heritage Homes has led the industry through a number of "firsts":

  • September 29, 2014: Hosted the first groundbreaking ceremony for the national NZE homes demonstration project.
  • September 11, 2015: Hosted an industry grand opening for its Net Zero Discovery Home -- the first to be completed as part of the NZE national demonstration project. The home opened to the public on September 19, 2015, with over 400 people in attendance.

Now, the renowned builder has a few more items to add to its growing list of leadership and innovation stewardship. Reid's Heritage Homes' Net Zero Discovery Home was recently labeled with the following impressive accolades:

  • The first NZE certified home in the NRCan ECO EII Program
  • The first NZE certified home in Ontario
  • The second NZE certified home in Canada

Reid's Heritage Homes was also the proud recipient of three awards at the EnerQuality awards gala, held on February 25, 2016. The EnerQuality awards celebrate industry leaders for their commitment to green building. Below are the three accolades awarded to Reid's Heritage Homes:

  • Net Zero Builder of the Year
Given to a builder who demonstrates a commitment to building Net Zero/Net Zero Ready homes

  • Best Green Marketing Campaign of the Year

Through the use of high quality home fixtures and appliances designed and tested to save water and reduce utility bills, the builder has taken the NZE homes one step further and made four of the homes BlueBuilt Home certified. Two homes are at the Bronze level while another two are at the Gold level.

Reid's Heritage Homes' remaining four NZE homes are nearing completion in the builder's signature community of Westminster Woods, located in Guelph, Ontario. Ranging in size from 1,691 to 1,775 square feet, all floor plans feature 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. One of the homes will be move-in ready in March 2016 while the remaining three will be move-in ready in the summer of 2016. All four are currently for sale starting in the low $500s.
