Reliability of Critical Turbomachinery Increased With Woodward Enhanced Steam Turbine Controller

FORT COLLINS, CO--(Marketwire - August 20, 2007) - Woodward Governor Company (www.woodward.com) announced today the production release of the company's 505 Enhanced steam turbine controller, which incorporates a redundancy option for critical turbomachinery applications requiring increased reliability.

Like previous generations of 505 controllers, the new 505 Enhanced controller (www.woodward.com/pdf/ic/03348.pdf) incorporates specifically designed algorithms to start, stop, control, and protect industrial steam turbines or turbo-expanders driving generators, pumps or compressors.

However, the new 505 Enhanced controller features a number of advancements over its well-proven predecessors. For generator applications, the enhanced controller features improved load rejection response algorithms when a generator- or tie-breaker opens, as well as new generator loading/unloading options. In compressor applications, the new controller incorporates compressor control decoupling, in which the turbine controller responds more effectively with the anti-surge controller during a surge event.

Also, as an option for critical applications requiring increased reliability, two 505 Enhanced controls can be connected in a redundant configuration to increase overall system availability. In this configuration, the two 505 Enhanced controls operate in a master/slave relationship, in which the master unit controls all aspects of the turbine system and the slave unit tracks the master unit's control loops and modes. This configuration allows for automatic and/or manual transfers between the two 505 Enhanced controllers in cases of control, transducer, or actuator failure, or when on-line program changes are desired.

The 505 Enhanced controller is the newest addition to Woodward's line of "5-Star Reliability" steam turbine solutions, including digital controls, overspeed protection units, actuators, and governors. Woodward's "5-Star Reliability program" focuses on five key elements of optimizing turbomachinery reliability, including stringent quality control systems for the design and manufacturing of the control units, unit level redundancy, system level redundancy, fault coverage, and global product support and service.

The 505 Enhanced controller is designed to operate industrial steam turbines using one or two (split-range) actuators to drive the steam inlet valves. The 505 control's unique PID control loop structure makes it ideal for applications where it is required to control steam plant parameters like turbine speed, turbine load, turbine inlet or exhaust header pressure, or tie-line power.

The new controller is available from many steam turbine manufacturers and packagers worldwide, or through Woodward's global distribution and support network. For more details, visit www.woodward.com/turbine.
