Attention: Education Editor, Environment Editor, Science Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor, Travel/Tourism Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA RELEASE--(Marketwire - July 14, 2008) - Algonquin Park, Ont. - Summer is here, and it's time to plan the perfect getaway. Picture yourself surrounded by the pristine natural beauty of Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park. Listen as the mournful cry of a wolf echoes in the still night. Stroll on a sandy private beach or paddle through the crystal waters of Lake Travers. Gaze in awe at Canada's largest radio telescope.

Radio telescope?

That's right. For the first time since its inauguration in 1959, the Algonquin Radio Observatory is open to visitors and will be hosting an open house event on Saturday, 19 July, between 10 am and 3 pm with advanced media access Friday, 18 July.

Visitors will enjoy guided tours, meet with staff and scientists, and learn about radio astronomy and space science. Get a behind-the-scenes view of one of Canada's true engineering marvels.

Located at Kilometer 72 on the Achray Road in the North East of Algonquin Park near access point 23, the Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO) is Canada's national radio observatory. Completed in 1967, ARO's 46 metre (150 foot) dish is the largest in Canada and one of the largest in the world. Due to its remote location, the Observatory also offers comfortable accommodation for researchers and visitors. Reservations are required.
