REMINDER/City of Montreal: Les week-ends du monde au parc Jean-Drapeau

Latin America Celebrates Thursday, August 3, to Sunday, August 6 and Thursday, August 10

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 3, 2006) - Mr. Marcel Tremblay, member of the executive committee responsible for intercultural relations, invites Montrealers to celebrate the warm and sensuous Latin culture at the Latin-American Festival of Montreal, which is held as part of Les week-ends du monde au parc Jean-Drapeau, on Ile Notre-Dame, August 3 to 6, and August 10. The event continues on Friday, August 11, Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13 with Mexico, Bolivia and Guatemala until the closing of the Les Week-ends du monde.

This great musical celebration features Latin-American culture, traditional and modern music, dance, food, handicrafts, and lots of warmth and energy. Several cultures from South America will be featured during that weekend dedicated mostly to music and dance.

The calendar of events features music from Peru, Colombia, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Featured at the colourful event are several artists of international acclaim, as well as guest performers.

Celebrations begin on Thursday, August 3, with Peru. Featured will be Max Castro, Peruvian music ambassador and the Chopkjas group. Also featured will be Esencia del Peru performing salsa with a Peruvian twist, Cuban and Venezuelan music, as well as folk dance troupe Quimbara.

On Friday, the Dominican Republic takes over with Latin world hip hop, featuring Criollo, Elvis Martinez, and Freddy Anthony who will perform bachata, as well as traditional Dominican music with Joaquin Diaz... a must-see on the Montreal world beat scene.

On Saturday, August 5, Colombia will celebrate several international artists, including Canela, a group made up of 12 young, talented female performers, dance troupe Raices de Colombia, who will perform folk, contemporary and classical dance, and the Valleson music group.

On Sunday, August 6, Cuba introduces King of Swing Jose Alcides, Barbara Araya, the grande dame of cabaret and her Afro-Cuban group, and the hot rhythms of Congo Habana. To close the evening, "salsa romantica" giant Eddie Santiago will heat up the audience with his suave and mellow music.

Chile will close the Latin-American Festival of Montreal on August 10 with music from the Andes featuring Atacamenos, dancing with the folk troupe Arco Iris, made up of children and teens 10 to 20 years old, as well as Chilean music with Trio Fogon.

The celebrations continue August 11 to 13 with Bolivia, Mexico and Guatemala. Featured will be Qbanito, Montreal singer of Cuban origin Don Jost Figueroa, third generation Mariachis Figueroa of Mexico, Bolivian folk dance troupes Kollasuyo and Nuevo Amanecer, as well as the Marimba Maya group from Guatemala.

General admission for the Latin-American Festival of Montreal is $5 on Saturday, August 5 Thursday, August 10, and $10 on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, August 3, 4 and 6.

Recycling at Les Week-ends du monde au parc Jean-Drapeau

For the first time, Les Week-ends du monde will be recycling, in cooperation with the Consortium Echo-logique and Ville de Montreal. Participants and merchants are doing their part for the environment, and have installed 50 recycling bins on the site, to give a second life to recyclable containers and packaging.

Access to the site

Montrealers are urged to use public transportation to and from the site. Use the Jean-Drapeau (Ile Sainte-Helene) station on the yellow line. Shuttle bus No. 167 takes visitors from the Metro station to the site.
