Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor VANCOUVER, BC, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - Oct. 25, 2010) - More than 650 delegates representing health care workers from across the province will gather in Vancouver next week to set the course for B.C.'s largest health care union over the next two years.

Business at the biennial convention of the Hospital Employees' Union includes the election of the union's president, financial secretary and other members of the provincial executive, as well as debate and discussion of a number of policy and constitutional issues.

The convention sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. daily at the conference center at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in downtown Vancouver.

Monday, October 25 @ 2:30 p.m.
Former UK Health Secretary Frank Dobson, M.P.
Labour MP Frank Dobson served as Tony Blair's first health secretary and is a critic of market-based reforms to the National Health Service in the UK that have often been touted by the B.C. Liberal government as a blueprint for changes to health care policy in the province such as so-called patient-focused funding. He has represented his central London riding for 31 years.

The Hospital Employees' Union represents 43,000 health and community social services workers in both the public and private sectors in a variety of acute care, residential and community settings.

HEU members work in more than 270 occupations in every area of health care and include care aides, LPNs and other patient care jobs; a number of technical and support roles such as health records technicians, pharmacy technicians, lab assistants, trades workers, housekeepers, dietary staff, accounting staff, buyers, logistics and supply staff; and community health workers and group home staff.
