Reminder: Legal Aid Crisis in British Columbia

The Legal Aid Crisis in BC Leads Local Lawyers to Bring in Help from Ontario – June 15 & 16

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, NEWS ADVISORY--(Marketwire - June 14, 2010) - Toronto-Based Lawyer Paul Burstein to Make Presentations
at Provincial Courthouses in Vancouver and Surrey

The president of the Toronto-based Criminal Lawyers' Association will arrive in British Columbia next week to deliver crucially important messages about the funding crisis that continues to plague legal aid.

The situation has gone from bad to worse in British Columbia. Funding levels have not improved, and fewer legal services are covered in family law, criminal law and immigration cases. Rather than representing citizens properly, limited funding and limited service represent an enormous problem.

Though the lack of legal aid funding remains a big problem in Ontario, lawyers in that province were instrumental in improving the situation in recent years.

Lawyer Paul Burstein will present two key information sessions next week at the provincial courthouses in Vancouver and Surrey. These free presentations are open to all members of the legal profession and the news media.

Mr. Burstein will share his knowledge about the recent and current battles for legal aid in Ontario, and he will discuss the similarities and differences between BC's current challenge and the Ontario experience, to date.

12:30 pm - Tuesday, June 15:
Vancouver Provincial Courthouse, located at 222 Main Street.

12:00 pm - Wednesday, June 16:
Surrey Provincial Courthouse, located at 14340 57th Avenue.

Both events will feature a presentation followed by a discussion with counsel.

If you want to attend either of the presentations or schedule an interview with Mr. Burstein while he is in town, please call Bentley Doyle at 604-682-5343, or send an email to bentley@tlabc.org.
