REMINDER: Live Interactive Webcast: Coronary Angioplasty With Stent Placement

From Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC), February 18, 2009 at 6:30 PM CST

MERRIAM, KS--(Marketwire - February 18, 2009) - Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) will host an angioplasty stent placement webcast on Wednesday, February 18, at 6:30 p.m. Jhulan Mukharji, MD, FACC, of Clinical Cardiovascular Associates, PA, will perform the procedure and his partner Jay Jackson, MD, FACC, will serve as the moderator. A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) procedure will broadcast live on Tuesday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m.

Angioplasty Stent Placement Webcast

"This procedure has become the first choice of treatment for heart attacks when it can be performed in a timely manner," said Mukharji.

The purpose of an angioplasty stent placement procedure is to open up blockages in the blood vessels of the heart, which in the past, was done using a balloon.

"Although balloons are sometimes still used during the procedure, a stent is used in approximately 80 to 90 percent of the cases," he said. "Stents are more durable long-term in keeping the vessel open."

In appropriately selected patients, angioplasty stent placements can be done electively or emergently, are less invasive and have a shorter recovery time than bypass surgery.
