BACKGROUND: Last year Governor Jennifer Granholm signed House Bill 4803 that requires Michigan's public schools to begin the school year after Labor Day. The result: 2006 is "Michigan's Longest Summer," approximately two weeks longer than previous years, allowing for additional Michigan summer travel by many families.

Travel Michigan, the state's official tourism promotion agency, will use the new "Pure Michigan" television commercials and a marketing partnership with the Michigan Lottery to boost August travel in Michigan. The television commercials and lottery promotion will be unveiled at this event.

A Michigan summer cookout lunch will follow the news briefing. Dubs of the Pure Michigan television commercials will be available.
