Reminder - Presents: Morristown Memorial Hospital Surgeon to Perform Live CHARITÉ™ Artificial Disc Surgery

Live Webcast Friday June 24th at 2 pm EDT (18:00 UTC)

MORRISTOWN, NJ -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 24, 2005 -- Carl Giordano, MD, orthopedic surgeon and spine specialist at Morristown Memorial Hospital, will present a live Charité™ Artificial Disc surgery at 2 pm ET (18:00 UTC). The disk was developed by DePuy Spine, a Johnson & Johnson company, and is the first alternative to spinal fusion for treating degenerative disc disease.

The disc only became available in the United States last October, but not many surgeons are trained to use it. Popular in Europe, The Charité Artificial Disc has an unparalleled long-term clinical history proving safety, efficacy and remarkable durability with over 17 years and thousands of implantations worldwide with the current design.

According to Dr. Giordano, chief of the spine section at Morristown Memorial Hospital, degenerative disc disease is a natural part of aging, but not every patient is a candidate for the artificial disc. "We are only considering patients in extreme pain for disc replacement surgery. Most patients will still be treated with traditional techniques," he said. In the surgery the disc is placed in the spine through an incision just below the belly button. The diseased disc is removed and the artificial disc is placed in the space.

Prior to Charité, patients would undergo spinal fusion, a procedure where the vertebrae are fused together with bone grafts. Spinal fusion, however, prevents the lower back from bending naturally.

With Charité disc replacement surgery, patients benefit from a greater range of motion, many reporting they have normal range of motion. Recovery time is also faster. Patients often resume normal activities in about six weeks, compared to the four to six months it usually takes with spinal fusion.

Morristown Memorial has one of New Jersey's largest orthopedic programs specializing in total joint replacement, trauma care, spine surgery, sports medicine and hand surgery. Earlier web casts included minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, heart bypass surgery, gastric bypass surgery and minimally invasive chest surgery.
