REMINDER/PIPSC/Media Advisory: Computer Systems Professionals Rally in Edmonton Against Pay Cuts

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 27, 2005) - Federal computer systems professionals will rally in Edmonton to show their support while their bargaining team meets with the Treasury Board in Ottawa to obtain a new contract.

When: Monday, June 27, 2005
12:00 Noon

Where: Canada Place
9700 Jasper Avenue (Rice Howard Way Entrance)

Members will rally to show their support for their bargaining team, to show their determination in keeping their retention allowance, to protect their purchasing power and for quicker resolution of the collective agreement.

"Computer systems professionals are determined to get a fair contract with no cut in pay and pension. The last time the federal government imposed pay cuts was during the Depression. In 2005, pay cuts are just not acceptable", said PIPSC President Michele Demers.

Research has demonstrated that a computer systems professional who retires at age 60 with 30 years of service would lose $24,000 in his pension by age 80 if the retention bonus is cut. Treasury Board is determined to cut the allowance which represents between 3-4% of salary. The union wants it rolled into salary.

PIPSC represents 15,000 computer systems professionals in government departments across Canada. The CS Group collective agreement expired on December 21, 2004.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is the largest multi-profession union in Canada, representing 50,000 professionals and scientists across the country.
