REMINDER/Plan Ahead When Celebrating the Season With a Glass of Holiday Cheer

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 23, 2014) - Celebrating the season with a little liquid holiday cheer? MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada implore you to plan ahead for a sober ride home.

"If you're going to be drinking, please put the keys away," said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. "Arranging a sober ride home only takes a few minutes and could save lives, including your own."

Every year, between 1,250 and 1,500 people are killed and another 63,000 are injured in impaired driving crashes.

Ms. Souranis knows the pain of losing a loved one to impaired driving. Her son Craig was killed in an impairment-related crash in 2008. As she prepares herself to face another Christmas without him, she wants all Canadians to know they have the power to prevent impaired driving crashes, deaths and injuries.

"Impaired driving is entirely preventable. By planning ahead, making good decisions and looking out for one another, we can ensure this tragic and senseless crime does not claim any more victims," Ms. Souranis said.

MADD Canada and its long-time partner and sponsor, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada, ask Canadians to do their part to make our roads safer this holiday season:

  • Never drive impaired; plan ahead if you're going to be drinking - take a cab, take a bus, arrange a designated driver or plan to stay over;

  • Don't accept a ride from a driver who may be impaired;

  • If you see a driver you suspect is impaired, call 911.

"Allstate Canada, its agents and employees across the country wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season," said Allstate Insurance Company of Canada President and CEO John O'Donnell. "We join MADD Canada in encouraging Canadians to give one another the gift of safer roads. Plan ahead and follow through on the commitment to drive safe and drive sober this holiday season."
