Remploy Crusade to save jobs reaches Yorkshire and Humberside

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2007) - The Remploy Consortium of Trade Unions (Unite the Union, GMB, and Community) crusade to stop the dreadful closures of 43 Remploy factories arrives in Sheffield tomorrow (6th September) and will visit Remploy factories in the region including the Remploy factories in Bradford, Halifax, Hull and York which are scheduled for closure.

The Remploy road trip launched in Aberdeen on Tuesday 28th August 2007 is travelling through Scotland, England and Wales visiting over 60 Remploy sites holding rallies and public meetings culminating in Bournemouth at the Labour Party Conference on Sunday 23rd September where Unite are holding a major demonstration.

Trade Unions are calling on political and public support across Yorkshire and Humberside to take part in this crusade to bring work into the Remploy factories to stop the closure of these sites.

Unite Regional Secretary, Davey Hall said:
"We have received massive support since we initially launched our crusade in Aberdeen and we are urging the public to come along to any rallies and meetings in their towns to support the campaign and make it a success.

"We are determined to bring work into the Remploy factories in Yorkshire and Humberside otherwise hundreds of disabled people will find themselves out of work."

Unite, the GMB, and Community are making history in attempting such a gruelling schedule and never before have the trade unions taken on such a difficult commitment, which will be a real challenge, to visit over 60 Remploy sites and to hold so many public meetings.

Unite the Union and GMB members working at Remploy factories including York and Hull will be balloted next week (11th September) for industrial action over the company's proposal to close the 43 sites and make thousands of employees redundant.
