Income tax returns for 2006 will be considered as filed on time, with no late-filed penalties on amounts owed, if they are received on or before midnight on April 30, 2007, or if they are postmarked by this date. The penalty for filing a return late is 5% of the balance owing, plus an additional 1% for each month the return is late.

The CRA reminds self-employed individuals and their spouses that their filing deadline is midnight on June 15, 2007. Self-employed individuals who will owe taxes still have to pay the balance owing by April 30 to avoid arrears interest on amounts owed. The current rate of interest is 9%.

Taxpayers are also reminded that they must file their tax returns on time to ensure that they receive, or continue to receive, their Canada Child Tax Benefit payments and goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credits.

The CRA has already received 15.9 million returns. Of those, 61% were filed electronically. Sending a tax return using Netfile over the Internet, taking it to a tax preparer who will send it electronically through EFILE, or sending it over the telephone using Telefile will speed up processing. People using these electronic services can expect to get their Notice of Assessment within two weeks, and in the case of a refund using direct deposit, in as fast as eight business days.
