REPEAT: MEDIA ADVISORY: Metis Nation of Ontario Citizens to Gather at the Annual General Assembly in North Bay This Weekend


NORTH BAY, ON --(Marketwired - August 26, 2016) - From August 27-29, 2016, over 400 Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) leaders, citizens and supporters from across Ontario will participate in the 23rd MNO Annual General Assembly (AGA) being held at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre in North Bay.

Highlights of the weekend will include:

  • Canoes arriving at the opening ceremonies at Champlain Park beginning at 6:00 pm on Friday, August 26 to welcome delegates to the AGA. Dignitaries will arrive at the park in freighter canoes to be followed by the swearing-in of the recently elected members of the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO);
  • Juno-nominated Métis singer/songwriter Amanda Rheaume will perform a concert following the opening ceremonies;
  • MNO President, Margaret Froh will provide a State of the Nation address Saturday morning;
  • The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada and the Honourable David Zimmer, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (Ontario) will both speak to the Assembly on Saturday morning;
  • Presentation from noted Métis lawyer Jason Madden on Sunday morning on key Métis Rights developments including the recent Special Ministerial Representative Report from Mr. Tom Isaac, "A Matter of National and Constitutional Import", as well as the April 2016 Supreme Court of Canada ruling in Daniels v Canada .
