Replay Solutions Releases DevOps 2011 Trends Survey

1000+ IT Professionals Indicate DevOps is in Full Swing; Cite Better Communication, Increased Efficiency and Higher Quality as Major Benefits

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwire - April 5, 2011) - Replay Solutions (, a leader in continuous application monitoring, software debugging and defect resolution technology, today released the results of a new member of the Software Development Trends survey series covering the adoption of DevOps practices in large enterprises. The survey, DevOps 2011, was conducted in January in collaboration with HP and follows an in-depth survey of Java Platform trends released in mid-2010.

This is the first DevOps study to combine both technology and management perspectives, providing an integrated look at DevOps motivation and adoption in organizations from less than 100 people to the Global 100. According to, DevOps "is a set of processes, methods and systems for communication, collaboration and integration between departments for Development (Applications/Software Engineering), Technology Operations and Quality Assurance (QA)." Surprisingly, given both the technology and organization challenges in executing DevOps, the study's major finding is that almost 25% of the responders now have a formal DevOps process with dedicated staff. In addition, another approximately 25% practice DevOps with personnel from shared teams.

In addition to comprehensively covering a range of organization sizes, the survey represents a wide mix of industries including retail, manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, education, and consulting. The study also highlights the connection between DevOps and organizational support while also illustrating how trends such as migration to the cloud featured in the Java Platform 2010 survey are also driving its adoption. For example:

  • Almost 50% of the responders claim an active DevOps program with the majority ranking "culture" and "management directives" more important than technology in driving DevOps adoption.
  • Despite the emphasis on organization, over 90% indicated that software tools were either "important" or "somewhat important" to DevOps success. Tools cited ranged from defect tracking and source code control systems to agile workflow tools and automated defect resolution tools.
  • Large organizations are more likely to have dedicated DevOps teams. Smaller organizations tend to implement DevOps with resources borrowed from other teams.
  • The three major DevOps benefits that were cited are: faster mean time to resolution for defects; team communication; and smoother software upgrades, echoing key DevOps objectives of collaboration and communication.
  • DevOps seems to be having the desired effect. Survey responders report that DevOps uniquely helps challenges with the software upgrade and release management process. 60% indicated that they can now do releases or major patch releases at least every 30 days.
  • Consistent with the Replay Java Platform Trends 2010 survey, data center automation and cloud computing are ranked high in importance in facilitating DevOps.
  • Not surprisingly, Agile Development is also a key DevOps driver. Over 60% said they use Agile in at least some part of their organization.
