Report Back on "It's Time for Public Child Care" Tour

Queen's Park, Outside Main Legislative Building, Thursday March 6 at 11:00 a.m.

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor (TORONTO, ONTARIO, ADVISORY)--(Marketwire - March 5, 2008) - The OFL and the Coalition for Better Child Care have just wrapped up a tour of the province that included stops in Thunder Bay, Peterborough, London, Guelph, Sudbury, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa, St. Catharines, and Hamilton.

The tour, It's time for Public Child Care, is back in Toronto on Thursday and will report back on what the Forums in each city had to say about the very real threat of corporate child care taking hold in Ontario.

"We want to build a quality public child care system in this province," said Irene Harris, OFL Secretary-Treasurer. "We don't want 'big box' child care to push its way into Ontario. If we let these corporate child care operators in, then we all lose - parents lose, children lose and our communities lose."

"Parents across the province are scrambling to get child care spaces in not-for-profit child care centres," said Andrea Calver from the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care. "We must push for the Ontario Government to call a moratorium on licensing these 'big box' operations and look instead to the Quebec model of child care where parents have quality public child care for just $7.00 a day."

The rally will have children from local child care centres to help get the message to Queen's Park that public child care is the way to go - not corporate players who have child care centres in their stock portfolios.

Speaking at the Rally will be:

Andrea Calver, OCBCC
Irene Harris, OFL Secretary-Treasurer
Olivia Chow, NDP MP
Andrea Horwath, NPD MPP
