Report: IBM Recognized Leader in Service Oriented Architectures

ARMONK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 16, 2005 -- A new independent research report by AMR Research found that IBM is the recognized leader in Service Oriented Architectures (SOA). In the report that surveyed IT executives, "Service Oriented Architectures: Survey Findings on Deployment and Plans for the Future," IBM was cited as the SOA industry leader three times more often than the closest competitor. IBM was selected by 37 percent of respondents, versus only 13 percent for the second closest competitor and was mentioned as a leader more often than the next three competitors combined.

SOA is a way of viewing business processes as a set of linked services, and an approach that uses open standards to make a company's business operations more efficient, effective and collaborative. With business processes supported by an SOA foundation, a company can make its previously siloed data and software applications better interoperate across business units, as well as with third parties. This approach leverages existing resources to help improve productivity, quickly react to changing market conditions and seize opportunities.

"IBM's leadership in Service Oriented Architectures is a direct result of the investments and focus from across the company to help customers use this technology to become nimble on demand business that can rapidly respond to changing market conditions," said Sandy Carter, vice president, strategy, channels and marketing, IBM WebSphere Software. "The industry leadership of WebSphere software, extensive professional services capabilities and deep industry specific expertise can't be matched by any single vendor attempting to deploy SOAs."

"We asked who our surveyed companies thought were leaders in SOA technology. IBM was mentioned most often, leading other providers nearly three to one," said Eric Austvold, research director, AMR Research.

To extend leadership in helping customers use SOAs to become on demand businesses, IBM recently announced a series of new products and services. These include the IBM SOA Foundation, an integrated set of open standards-based software, best practices, governance models and patterns to help clients model, assemble, deploy and manage SOA; SOA Industry Accelerators which are reusable, industry-specific assets that build on the SOA Foundation; new software including WebSphere Business Modeler to help customers model SOAs, WebSphere Integration Developer to build and deploy business processes in an SOA, WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) for connectivity and integration for Web services-focused applications and services, a new version of WebSphere Message Broker for advances ESB functionality WebSphere Process Server for business process integration; and enhancements to WebSphere Business Monitor.

Recently announced professional services include an SOA Governance offering that sets a baseline for measuring improvements, track SOA projects, build a pool of skilled resources and establish the structure for making decisions about SOA initiatives; new SOA Industry Teams aligned to key vertical industries to further help customers ease deployment and generate business value faster from SOAs; and the Common Services Delivery Platform (CSDP), a repository of reusable assets -- based on IBM software and third party applications -- that will execute specific business processes such as claims processing or inventory management.
