Representative King Announces Abilene as the Site of Satellite Mary Crowley Cancer Research Center

ABILENE, TX--(Marketwire - February 26, 2008) - Representative Susan King proudly announced today that Abilene was selected to be the site of a West Texas satellite clinic for Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers (Mary Crowley). In collaboration with the Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC), Mary Crowley, which runs one of the largest cancer vaccine programs in the country, will bring state of the art cancer research capabilities to West Texas.

"We are fortunate to have the opportunity to be the home of a premier cancer research facility like Mary Crowley," said King. "The center will expand access to care for the many brave individuals who are battling such a terrible disease. We can be proud that Abilene and the Big Country will have the resources to help fight and hopefully eliminate cancer."

The State of Texas granted TTUHSC $4.8 million for the research program, stating that it was to partner with an established cancer research facility. TTUHSC chose Mary Crowley for its new and pioneering therapies not otherwise available to late stage cancer patients in underserved areas of Texas. Mary Crowley will provide clinical access to the latest pioneering cancer therapies, for which patients will no longer have to travel to Dallas or Houston. The site for the center will be selected in the upcoming months.

"This innovative pilot program, combining the best of biotech, clinical access and investigational drug development, will transform the cancer landscape in Abilene," said Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, a steadfast Mary Crowley supporter. "I remain committed to bringing the very best scientific advances in fighting cancer to Texans and look forward soon to the day when everyone in Texas can access the latest pioneering therapies to combat this common enemy."

Mary Crowley is breaking new ground by developing personalized cancer treatments using molecular medicine such as cancer vaccines, which educate the patient's personal immune system to fight the cancer cells. Mary Crowley has developed research that allows the study of patient-specific genetic patterns, which provides a basis for a targeted therapy plan. By engaging a patient's own genetic makeup into the fight against cancer, Mary Crowley exponentially increases the probability of stopping the cancer growth without harm to healthy cells.

"I am happy to support this pilot program bringing new research opportunities and cutting edge cancer clinical trails to rural and underserved areas of West Texas," said Speaker Tom Craddick. "My commitment to leveling the playing field for Abilene, Midland and all of West Texas will continue until our local patients have the very best options available anywhere to battle this disease. This initiative will bring with it amazing synergies between our local resources and the biotech interests focused on development in West Texas. Our rural cities and towns are ideal settings for growth and innovation, and we will marshal our resources to partner with respected research programs like Mary Crowley to fight cancer in our local communities."

The announcement was made today at the District office of Representative King in Abilene.
