Representatives of The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani Applaud Spotlight on Education for Girls

The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani Comments on the Importance of Educating Women and Encouraging Them to Become Empowered and Take on Key Leadership Roles

SULAIMANI, IRAQ--(Marketwired - Apr 4, 2013) - The American University of Iraq Sulaimani (AUIS) is an educational organization that encourages its female students to take ownership of their academic experience and use their skills and knowledge to create positive change in the world. As such, AUIS was happy to see that an upcoming feature film called "Girl Rising," announced by an article published by the Huffington Post, will bring attention to the need to empower female students with an education that will allow them to rise above the harrowing statistics associated with the life of a woman in today's world.

The article shares some of these devastating statistics: "Sixty-six million girls are out of school worldwide. Girls are the victims of 80 percent of all human trafficking crimes. Girls and women are the victims of 75 percent of the AIDS cases in Sub-Saharan Africa, the region hardest hit by this disease. One hundred and fifty million girls are victims of sexual violence in a single year and 50 percent of all the sexual assaults in the world are on girls under 15. Fourteen million girls under 18 will be married this year and, tragically, the number 1 cause of death for girls 15-19 is childbirth."

The article goes on to explain that educating girls can improve these statistics significantly, as it can reduce their likelihood of becoming child brides, increase the survival rates of their children, and boost their earning potential as professionals. AUIS agrees that empowering women through education is essential in moving the world in a positive direction.

"Women's empowerment, particularly in education, is an important cause that AUIS supports through the enthusiasm and hard work of many of its students, staff, and faculty," asserts The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani in a press statement. "We recently hosted Women's Empowerment Week, a series of events that raised over $2,000 for a local women's rights organization. AUIS hopes that, through launching events like Women's Empowerment Week and encouraging the continued academic excellence of its female students, we are able to advance this important cause in Iraq and provide the country with the next generation of women leaders."
