ReputationDefender Proposes Social Media Bill of Rights

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwire - June 17, 2010) -  In advance of ReputationDefender's Chief Privacy Officer, David Thompson, speaking at the 20th Annual Computers, Freedom, and Privacy Conference (CFP2010) today at San Jose State University, the company has put forth its own draft of a Social Media Bill of Rights, to foster dialogue and ideas on how social networking sites should treat users and protect privacy.

As social networks have massively grown in both user numbers and societal importance, so have the number of privacy violations. Some are known, but many are not. The resulting network/user dialogue -- most recently with Facebook -- has left users more confused than reassured. ReputationDefender believes it's time users took control of their online privacy by demanding standards in the industry that respect their rights and protect their personal information. To that point, social networking sites need to recognize and grant each of these rights to users in an open and transparent way:

  1. The right to control the sharing of personal information through adjustable privacy settings
  2. The right to know what personal information is being collected
  3. The right to know what information is being sold and to whom
  4. The right to easily close social network accounts and delete all stored personal information
  5. The right to have the minimum amount of data about you collected per transaction

In addition to Thompson's session on "Computers, Freedom, and Privacy from a Corporate Perspective," he will also provide a demo of ReputationDefender's Facebook privacy application, PrivacyDefender, at CFP2010.
