Research Day Emphasizes Interdisciplinary Learning at Spelman College

Spelman's Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research Is Set for April 15

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - April 14, 2016) -  Spelman College will host Research Day on April 15 for more than 250 student presenters who will participate in the College's annual showcase of undergraduate research.

Research Day provides students with experience presenting their scholarly work and investigative research to professionals and the general public. The all-day event will feature talks, poster and digital presentations, which culminate in an awards ceremony to recognize students and faculty advisors.

This year's theme is "Showcasing Our Integrated Learning Experience." Presentations will cover a diverse range of disciplines including the arts, humanities, education, social sciences, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

"There has been an increase in the number of summer and academic research internships for students in STEM, the social sciences, humanities and the arts," said Bruce Wade, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and director of the Spelman College Census Information Center. "The concepts of STEAM (STEM plus the arts), 3-D printing, maker spaces, digital humanities, and inquiry-based learning are now the order of the day. Our students are making strides and exploring cutting-edge innovations in robotics, digital, and information technology and data mining, as well as in laboratory and field research."

Research Day is free and open to the public. The event is co-chaired by Dr. Wade and Tiffany R. Oliver, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Biology.

The event practices the Sustainable Spelman model by incorporating a digital program guide to disseminate information about the event.

The plenary speaker for Research Day will be Lia Haynes Smith, Ph.D., C'93, associate director for laboratory science in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's division of viral diseases.

The guest speaker will be Shawn Drew Gaillard, Ph.D., C'91, molecular biologist and training officer with the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"Research Day presentations represent 25 academic disciplines, as well as each academic division on campus. Such a range of disciplinary perspectives indicates our belief in the benefits of a liberal arts education," said Dr. Oliver. "As we continue to promote sound undergraduate research and scholarship, we know that our students will prevail in the journey to excellence that defines Spelman's mission."
