The process involves removing oil from the sand in the form of bitumen. Bitumen is essentially a very thick, unrefined form of crude oil. The lands where bitumen is found are owned by the government and companies pay access fees and royalties in exchange for production. This system promotes industry growth and balance while discouraging monopolies.

Currently, there is an estimated 170 billion barrels of viable oil in Canada's oil sands deposits primarily located in Alberta. About 1 million barrels can be processed a day now but that number is expected to quadruple by 2020. Even at those rates production could go on for over a 100 years.

The burgeoning oil sands production in combination with a generally more politically stable Canada is solidifying the industry and positioning it for sustained growth.
