Research Study Indicates Two Widely Used Supplements for Arthritis Pain Are Found to Be Ineffective

RENO, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 20, 2006 -- Martin Nutraceuticals Inc. (OTC: MNCL). Two widely used nutritional supplements for arthritis pain do not effectively soothe patients aching knees, a large US study has found.

The study of glucosamine and chondroitin was meant to provide a definite answer to a question that has baffled doctors and patients alike. Do these supplements work?

In the 24 week study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 1583 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomly assigned to one of five groups. Some patients took glucosamine, some took chondroitin and some took both. Others took a placebo or Celebrex.

No effect was found for glucosamine, chondroitin, or the combination of both.

Between December 2003 and December 2005 Canadians bought $64 million worth of glucosamine or 4.5 million unites according to the marketing information company AC Nielson, while Americans spent an estimated $734 million on glucosamine and chondroitin in 2004 according to the Nutrition Business Journal. The two are often sold in combination as a treatment for arthritis.

Harvey Panesar, President of Martin Nutraceuticals Inc., had this comment, "We are pleased that we are able to supply one of our flagship products, Arthrizyme™ as a proven remedy for the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. (Read Martin Press Release: March 7, 2006 - Martin Nutraceuticals Inc. (MNCL: OTCPK) references new studies that show the effectiveness of using its’ proprietary product Arthrizyme™). "As we prepare to launch Arthrizyme across North American, people will have an alternative to glucosamine and chondroitin. The timing couldn't be better for us as this study proves the window of opportunity is there to tackle a major health problem with Arthrizyme."
