Responding to Job Loss and Building for Growth

An Economic Plan that Works for Everyone - To be released at 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 10 - USW (Steelworkers) Hall, 1031 Barton Street, Hamilton

Attention: Assignment Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - March 9, 2009) - Ontario is in the midst of the economic storm, and Hamilton is one of the cities hardest hit. To move the province out of the recession and into a sustainable future, the Ontario government has to be strategic and aggressive, says the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL).

OFL president Wayne Samuelson will be joined by local labour leaders and unemployed workers in Hamilton on Tuesday, March 10 to release the OFL's plan for Ontario's response to the economic crisis.

The crisis in manufacturing and forestry is spreading across the entire economy. Ontario lost 138,000 jobs between October 2008 and January 2009, more than 3,900 of them in the Hamilton area. More losses are forecast.

The Ontario government will deliver a new budget on March 26. It has the power and opportunity to stave off the worst of a recession, build a stronger and more sustainable economy, and to provide relief to people that really need help, says the OFL.

"Ontario needs a plan that works for everyone," says Samuelson.

Speaking at the news conference:
Wayne Samuelson, President, Ontario Federation of Labour
Don Fraser, President, Hamilton and District Labour Council
Tony DePaulo, Area Coordinator, United Steelworkers

The Ontario Federation of Labour advocates for 700,000 workers and their families. Affiliated unions represent workers in every sector of the economy.
