The Results of the 2017 Mayor's Christmas Food Drive in Support of the Calgary Food Bank

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - January 25, 2018) - During the month of December, businesses, students and communities came together with Mayor Naheed Nenshi to support the #CalgaryFoodBank. The #MayorsFoodDrive collected important food and funds for families and individuals in need during the holidays and into the New Year.

The 2017 campaign total of $641,846.98 in food and funds was announced at a wrap-up event today where students from Edgemont School celebrated their CANstruction® Junior competition contest win by hosting the Mayor and the Food Drive partners.

"I'm incredibly proud of the hard work by all our partners to make this year's Christmas Food Drive a success," said Mayor Nenshi. "This shows that, even in the midst of a fragile economic recovery, Calgarians remain committed to supporting their fellow citizens in need."

"The Mayor of Calgary leads by example, encouraging our community to help each other," says Calgary Food Bank CEO James McAra. "The need for emergency food continues at unprecedented levels and we do not expect it to ease any time soon. Calgarians are still struggling and thanks to the Mayor and our City, we will continue to ensure that no one goes hungry."

"Sobeys, Safeway and IGA are very proud to partner with the Calgary Food Bank 365 days of the year," says Renee Hopfner, Director Community Investment, Sobeys Inc. "During these difficult economic times, our stores continue to look for ways to help those seeking support. We are inspired by the generosity of our customers and leaders in the community such as Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Together, we can help more neighbours struggling to make ends meet access wholesome food today and into the winter months."

The generosity of Calgarians has ensured that the Calgary Food Bank can keep pace with the need and #feedYYC. This past year, more than 184,500 lives have been affected for a record high of over 90,800 hampers.
