Details of the TripAdvisor 2005 Travellers' Choice Awards - the best hotels nominated by travellers online were announced today.

TripAdvisor is the largest global travel information and advice destination on the web, with more than 18 million visitors per month and over three million independent reviews and opinions of some 200,000 hotels and attractions. Unlike any other hotel awards, TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice winners are uniquely "selected" by the millions of travellers from around the world who provide their real and unbiased reviews or opinions about hotels on tripadvisor.com(tm) and across the web.

The 2005 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards recognized the best hotels in five principal categories and among the global best in category were: Best Premium Hotel - Ritz Carlton Hong Kong; Best Hidden Gem - Holiday Inn Charleston USA and Best Bargain - Residenza Il Villino, Florence, Italy.

The 10 bedroom family-run Norwood Hotel in Blackpool was nominated one of best hotels anywhere for friendly, personal service, hospitality and value for money when it was selected a top 10 award winner as one of the "Hidden Gems" of the world and one of the top 10 "Best Bargain" hotels in the world

London Hotels did well in the "Premium" category with five being selected among the world's top 35 and four in Europe's top 10. The Covent Garden Hotel achieved the highest place in the category ranking 19th in the world and 5th in Europe. Meanwhile, the Premier Travel Inn, Liverpool was nominated one of Europe's top 10 "Best Bargains" and the Trafford Bank guest house in Inverness was nominated one the Europe's top 10 "Hidden Gems".

"This year's winners stand out for their excellence in service," said Michele Perry, spokesperson for TripAdvisor. "Because real travellers are making the selections, Travellers' Choice winners are not necessarily the 'in' places for the rich and famous but rather the hotels that make the average traveller feel rich and famous. This year's winners feature something for everyone, from bargain to luxury hotels in major cities to extraordinary finds in off-the-beaten-path places around the world."

Remaining faithful to its promise to provide the whole truth about travel, the good the bad and the ugly, TripAdvisor also identified the "Dirtiest" hotels based on traveller ratings for cleanliness. Based on these ratings the Russ Hill Hotel, Charlwood, Surrey has the dubious honour of being nominated Britain's dirtiest hotel.

The TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice award winners for 2005 were determined by a combination of TripAdvisor's Popularity Index and traveller ratings of specific attributes. TripAdvisor's Popularity Index is a proprietary algorithm that determines traveller satisfaction based on a variety of sources, including TripAdvisor hotel reviews and travel articles and opinions from across the web. TripAdvisor recently added ratings to the hotel review process, allowing travellers to "grade" hotels based on a variety of attributes, including cleanliness, value and suitability for specific types of travellers.
