Retail Brands Expand Globally With Pitney Bowes' Borderfree and MongoDB

Borderfree Relies on MongoDB to Power Global Ecommerce Solutions

NEW YORK, NY and PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 30, 2015) - MongoDB today announced that Borderfree, a market leader in international cross-border ecommerce solutions, and a Pitney Bowes company (NYSE: PBI), powers its global ecommerce platform with MongoDB. With MongoDB, Borderfree can bring new ecommerce stores to the global marketplace three times faster than before.

Borderfree partners with the world's most iconic consumer brands, enabling them to expand globally by handling every aspect of the online international shopping experience. The service includes site localization, multi-currency pricing, payment processing and cross-border logistics. After migrating key parts of its infrastructure to MongoDB, Borderfree is able to create localized international shopping experiences for its retail clients with higher performance and scalability, while reducing overhead and improving time to market for new ecommerce stores.

To adapt to a changing retail climate driven by multiple channels of interaction and higher expectations from customers in different markets, Borderfree aimed to scale its existing Java 2 Platform architecture with a geographically distributed, data center-aware database.

"MongoDB was an obvious choice to help us modernize key parts of our infrastructure and unlock global demand for retailers," said Warren Chang, VP of Engineering, Borderfree. "MongoDB has given us the ability to rapidly develop so we can continuously innovate coupled with scalability across data centers to better serve international markets, all with the utmost reliability and stability."

MongoDB powers BFX, Borderfree's new global ecommerce platform that enables retailers to create localized shopping experiences in days versus months. Borderfree used MongoDB to break down monolithic services into micro-services, which means the ecommerce platform can now quickly build and distribute globally with ease. MongoDB's dynamic schema supports rapid app innovation and continuous integration, while location-aware sharding enables global scale.

Borderfree also rebuilt its entire catalog, which houses close to 80 million products, in MongoDB. As a result of the migration each product can have custom attributes -- flexibility that was impossible in a relational database management system (RDBMS).

With MongoDB, Borderfree reduced the amount of overhead required to get new systems up and running quickly. Borderfree also leveraged MongoDB along with the MEAN stack of application tools (MongoDB, Express, Angular.js & node.js) to build data analytics tools that allow it to gather and easily manage transaction metadata and conversion metrics in order to gain deeper insight into international ecommerce patterns and behaviors.

"Data is the lifeblood of modern retail businesses, and a platform that offers high performance, scalability and flexibility delivers a significant competitive advantage," said Dev Ittycheria, president and CEO, MongoDB. "By moving its platform to MongoDB, Borderfree is enabling the biggest retail brands to seamlessly expand across borders, while powering its own growth to meet unwavering demand."
