Retailer Builds a Successful Business From the Floor Up

Rite Rug Celebrates Seventy-Five Years of Value and Service

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwire - August 26, 2009) - Rite Rug has been doing business the right way since 1934. The company, celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary this year, began when brothers Duke and Stanley Goldberg opened a flooring business in downtown Columbus with the idea of providing the best price, value and exceptional customer service. Since then, Rite Rug has expanded to include 25 locations in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana and has become known as one of the leading regional flooring retailers of carpet, hardwood, laminate and tile.

The family business is an exception to the rule; only 1 percent of American businesses actually make it to seventy-five years (Cardozo and Borchert 2002). Second generation Rite Rug owner Michael Goldberg believes the success stems from the values of Rite Rug's founders. "They believed in buying low and selling low. They tried to give the customer the best deal they could. They taught me everything I know."

Launching a business during the Great Depression made it essential for Duke and Stanley Goldberg to have honest deals and honorable selling tactics. Goldberg makes sure that tradition carries on today. "We do not cut corners. We are straight up with customers because I want to be proud of my business."

Rite Rug also expanded to make flooring more convenient for its original customer -- the homeowner. In the early 1960s, Mr. Edwards In-Home Shopping was created to bring the Rite Rug showroom into the customer's home. This free service allows customers to be absolutely certain their flooring choices work well with their home décor. Next-day installation on in-stock flooring is also available.

"Mr. Edwards In-Home Shopping is ideal for busy homeowners who want to maximize their time," said Erin Appleman, Rite Rug vice president of marketing and merchandising. "Customers can visit and request up to twenty flooring options to preview, all from the comfort of their own home. We take pride in making things more convenient for our customers."

Rite Rug's services have evolved to include a floor care program for premium carpet and upholstery cleaning. Rite Rug has also become a full-service, custom-fit window coverings provider offering free estimates and in-home consultations.
