RETRANSMISSION: Media Advisory: G20 Anniversary Rally to Feature Ex-Parliamentary Page Brigette DePape: Fundamental Freedoms Festival Calls for Independent Public Inquiry

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 25, 2011) - In order to mark the one year anniversary of the G20 summit in Toronto, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), Council of Canadians, Greenpeace, Now Magazine, Rabble.ca and many endorsing organizations are hosting a large fundamental freedoms festival at Queen's Park on Saturday June 25, 2011.

The event will include the first Toronto appearance of Brigette DePape, the courageous young Parliamentary Page whose civil disobedience garnered international attention to her "STOP HARPER!" message. Also speaking will be G20 arrestees, including John Pruyn, a middle-aged amputee whose artificial leg was ripped off by police while he was arrested and slammed into a makeshift cell. The speakers and performers will draw attention to the police abuse of power and the role that government played in suspending civil liberties.

June 25, 2011 will mark exactly one year since the G20 Summit in downtown Toronto, which saw the largest mass arrest in Canadian history and an unprecedented degree of infringement of individual civil liberties and fundamental freedoms. These issues have not been resolved. Much remains to be done to shed light on what really did happen during that fateful summer weekend, why it happened and ensuring that it never happens again.

G20:REDUX will be a family-friendly event, featuring an upbeat, positive musical and political festival marking the one-year anniversary of the Toronto G20, emphasizing fundamental freedoms (speech, assembly) in public space.
