Reza Shahi, a 43-year-old student from the University of Calgary smashed his way to ping pong glory at the Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Championship and has been crowned the Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Champion. On March 26, the ping pong balls were flying at THE MOD CLUB in downtown Toronto, as 16 Canadian student ping pongers went paddle-to-paddle, competing for national bragging rights, the priceless Golden Paddles Trophy and a $10,000 cash prize.

"This is totally amazing!" said Shahi, also know around the University of Calgary ping pong circuit as "Reza Dinos". "When I won the campus qualifier event at the University of Calgary I never thought that I would win the Championship! There is some stiff competition out there but I battled hard to make it to the top and I will wear this title with pride."

Last night at THE MOD CLUB, the finalists showed guts, stamina and unwavering school spirit throughout the Championship battle, which was hosted by Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice, Canada's favourite edgy competitive duo, from the hit Canadian reality show, Kenny vs. Spenny.

"Obviously, Kenny and I know a thing or two about competitions," says Spencer Rice, Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Championship Co-Host. "Ping pong is a terrific sport and Reza played his heart out for a well deserved victory. After years of battling Kenny, it's great to see someone win without cheating. I respect that. It was a great Championship."

"Reza Dinos could definitely beat Spenny in a rally," says Kenny Hotz, Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Championship Co-Host. "I wish they had competitions like this when I was in university, I definitely would have gotten involved. $10,000 cash means a lot when you're a student."

The 16 finalists came from far and wide to participate in the Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Championship and each brought their own school spirit and passion to the (ping pong) table. One finalist's family travelled more than 1,500 km to cheer him on, while another finalist was excused from his mid-terms to represent his campus at the Championship.

"The Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Playoffs and Championship is all about college and university students celebrating school spirit and their love for ping pong," says Michelle Lefler, Manager, Corporate Communication Canada, Cadbury. "Stride(R) gum's ridiculously long lasting flavor can outlast even the most intense ping pong rallies. We made sure that there was ample Stride(R) gum provided to these students so they could chew while staying focused on their game."

Crowned champion, Shahi, a sixth-year, Kinesiology student, smashed, dropped and lobbed his way to beat out more than 125 other students when the Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Playoffs campus tour visited the University of Calgary on February 10 and 11, 2009. Over the past two months, the Stride(R) gum team visited numerous college and university campuses across Canada, inviting Canadian academics to battle it out, Stride style, for a chance to win $1,000 and an all expenses paid trip to Toronto to compete in the Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Championship.

A special Wild Card Paddle Position was also open to all Canadian post-secondary students. Students had to submit an original, unduplicated, 150 - 300 word essay explaining "Why I deserve to be the Stride(R) Gum Ridiculously Long Lasting Ping Pong Playoffs Wild Card Winner" for their chance to win $1,000 and compete in the Championship. Both the Playoffs and Wild Card Paddle Position were open to all Canadian college and university students with a valid student ID.
