RFaxis Designed Into Rainforest Automation's New RAVEn ZigBee Smart Meter Reader Platform

ZigBee RF Front-End IC From RFaxis Extends Range for RAVEn In-Home Display and Enables Real-Time Energy Monitoring From Anywhere Within Homes With ZigBee Smart Power Meters

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - February 1, 2011) - RFaxis, a fabless semiconductor company focused on innovative, next-generation RF solutions for the wireless connectivity and mobility markets, today announced that its RFX2401 RF Front-end Integrated Circuit (RFeIC™) has been designed into Rainforest Automation's RAVEn™ (Radio Adapter for Viewing Energy) product. RAVEn™ is a USB based In-Home Display (IHD) that communicates directly with power meters equipped with ZigBee® Smart Energy wireless capabilities and provides real-time energy monitoring for users on any PC in their home. Rainforest Automation will demonstrate RAVEn™ at DistribuTECH 2011 in San Diego, Feb. 1-3, 2011.

Headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, Rainforest Automation, Inc. is a leader in residential energy management, and makes IHDs and Home Area Network (HAN) gateways to wirelessly extend the electrical Smart Grid into homes and facilitate real-time monitoring and optimization of energy consumption. By enabling two-way wireless communication between utilities and homeowners by way of smart power meters, utilities can now wirelessly communicate power information in real-time to their customers, collect power meter information for the utilities, and provide an energy management platform that benefits both.

Also designed into Rainforest Automation's Energy Monitoring Unit (EMU™) platform, the RFaxis RFX2401 RFeIC is the most highly integrated and cost-effective RF front-end solution for ZigBee® Smart Meter applications today. It integrates a high-efficiency power amplifier with 25dB gain and +23dBm maximum output power, low-noise amplifier, Tx/Rx port switch, antenna switch, harmonic filter, power detector, RF impedance matching and decoupling components, all within a single silicon die housed in a ultra-small and low-profile 3x3x0.5mm QFN package.

The ZigBee® Smart Energy public profile is the standard selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) in their Initial Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Framework for Home Area Network (HAN) device communications. The EMU™ conforms to these DoE standards for the hundreds of Smart Grid projects rolling out across the country. The new RAVEn™ uses the same JN5148 ZigBee® SoC from NXP and RFX2401 RF front-end from RFaxis as its core engines, but adds a USB interface which allows users to utilize all the resources of a home PC to provide advanced display capabilities, without having to pay for another fancy screen. The companion Personal Meter Reader™ software also allows RAVEn™ to connect to web-based energy management services such as Google PowerMeter and Microsoft Hohm.

"As millions of old electromechanical utility meters are replaced with digital smart meters, a growing number of households worldwide are joining the Smart Grid, and Rainforest Automation is excited to be a part of this global revolution," said Chris Tumpach, president of Rainforest Automation. "By partnering with RFaxis, we've been very successful with our EMU™ device, which has been FCC and ZigBee® Smart Energy certified. The RFaxis RFX2401 RFeIC is very easy to integrate into our EMU™ device, and delivers high quality front-end performance at a very compelling cost -- we are leveraging these benefits again for the RAVEn™."

"We are excited that we are able to deliver value to innovative Smart Energy companies such as Rainforest Automation," said Mike Neshat, chairman and CEO of RFaxis, "We have made great strides in the ZigBee market with our RFX2401 and antenna solutions, especially in the context of Smart Meters and other wireless Smart Energy devices. Like Rainforest Automation, we fully appreciate the inertia and value of the global smart energy movement, and look forward to continuing our partnership with Rainforest Automation in the quest for leading edge energy monitoring and management solutions."
