RFaxis and Ralink Technology Team Together to Deliver Industry's Most Cost-Effective Wi-Fi 3Tx3R MIMO Solutions

RFaxis Single-Chip/Single-Die RF Front-End IC RFX2402 Designed Into Multiple Wi-Fi 3Tx3R MIMO Platforms From Ralink Technology

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - January 31, 2011) - RFaxis, a fabless semiconductor company focused on innovative, next-generation RF solutions for the wireless connectivity and mobility markets, today announced that its RFX2402 RF Front-end Integrated Circuit (RFeIC™) has been designed into multiple platforms featuring the latest 802.11n 3Tx3R MIMO solutions from Ralink Technology.

The RFaxis RFX2402 RFeIC™ was selected for Ralink Technology's 3x3 MIMO USB dongle RT3573 and PCI-e router designs RF3883 due to its very compelling features: small size, competitive performance and attractive price. The RFX2402 comes with a complete set of RF front-end blocks needed for 802.11n Wi-Fi operations fully integrated onto a single silicon die that fits within a very compact 3x3mm QFN package. Even more compelling, the RFX2402 not only delivers competitive 11n performance using cost-effective silicon processes versus traditional GaAs processes, its on-die matching and filtering makes system integration extremely easy without having to craft inefficient external matching circuits.

Founded in 2001 with its headquarters in Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, Ralink Technology is a leading innovator and developer in the wireless home networking and broadband access semiconductor markets. Ralink products are recognized for their superior performance and reliability, rich feature set, low-power consumption and high levels of integration. Ralink's 802.11n Wi-Fi solutions are shipped to customers in the Americas, Europe and Asia, and are embedded in hundreds of products across all major Wi-Fi market segments including personal computers, printers, video game consoles, digital televisions, Blu-Ray players, web cameras, IPTV set-top-boxes, and broadband access gateways. Ralink was the first company in the industry to provide 450 Mbps 3Tx3R MIMO solution with Transmit Beam Forming, allowing bandwidth-intensive applications such as high-definition video streaming across the entire home.

RFaxis' RFX2402 is an RF Front-end IC (RFeIC™) that integrates a high-efficiency power amplifier with +18dBm linear power for OFDM 64QAM operation, a low-noise amplifier, antenna switch, harmonic filter, power detector and all RF impedance matching and decoupling components into a single silicon chip. Offered at $0.20 for high-volume customers and in volume shipment since summer 2010, RFX2402 is the most highly integrated and cost-effective Wi-Fi front-end solution for 802.11g/n applications on the market today. The new Ralink reference designs to use RFX2402 include a USB dongle and a PCI-e wireless router. Both are 3Tx3R MIMO designs that can deliver up to 450Mbps data rate enabling a plethora of client applications including high-definition video streaming.

"Ralink Technology is consistently recognized as a leader in the rapidly-growing Wi-Fi ecosystem. We are delighted that our RFX2402 has been selected for Ralink's latest 11n MIMO designs," said Mike Neshat, chairman and CEO of RFaxis. "As key Wi-Fi players such as Ralink continue to deploy a rapidly growing number of MIMO products that require multiple sub-systems of transmit/receive/switching circuits, it becomes cost-prohibitive to use conventional Front-End Modules (FEM). Furthermore, stitching together a MIMO RF front-end using discrete components is neither scalable nor optimal, especially as devices are ever-shrinking in size and PCB space becomes more and more constrained. The RFaxis RFX2402 is the perfect solution at the perfect time to support the technical and business needs of top-tier Wi-Fi MIMO solution providers."
