Rhode Island Business Plan Competition Announces Nov. 9 Elevator Pitch Event

PROVIDENCE, RI -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 26, 2006 -- The Rhode Island Business Plan Competition today announced that it will hold the first statewide Elevator Pitch-Off on Nov. 9, at which participants will present their business ideas in 90 seconds to a panel of judges and get immediate feedback and a chance to win cash prizes.

The event, co-sponsored with the Brown Forum for Enterprise, is open to anyone, but pre-registration is required.

"Making a good, persuasive business presentation requires practice, and this elevator pitch competition provides a great opportunity for new and existing entrepreneurs get in front of a panel of professionals who will give them a constructive critique," said Competition Co-Chair Charles Kingdon.

Garrett Hunter, president of the Business Development Company of Rhode Island and competition co-chair, noted, "The goal of business plan competition events is to provide insights and skills that all entrepreneurs need. While the Elevator Pitch-Off will help presenters directly, everyone attending should learn a lot."

Up to 30 presenters will make a 90-second presentation each to a panel of six judges. Following each presentation, the judges will give a minute or two of feedback about the clarity and persuasiveness of the presentation. At the end of the evening, cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be awarded to the best presenters.

While the Elevator Pitch-Off is an event of the 2007 Rhode Island Business Plan Competition, participation is independent of the competition itself. Those considering applying to the competition are not required to participate in the Pitch-Off. Anyone may participate in the Pitch-Off whether or not they apply to the competition.
