Rhode Island Personal Injury Law Firm Bottaro Law Urges Boating Safety

CRANSTON, RI--(Marketwire - May 24, 2012) - As the warm weather arrives and many people begin to participate in recreational boating, Rhode Island personal injuries resulting from boating accidents occur more frequently.

AV-Rated Providence personal injury lawyer Mike Bottaro, founder of The Bottaro Law Firm, LLC, urges Rhode Islanders to stay safe on the water this season to avoid personal injuries from boating accidents. "We have over 400 miles of beautiful coastline here in Rhode Island. The Narragansett Bay is a true natural resource and great place to enjoy the outdoors through boating, diving, and fishing," explained Bottaro. "As a RI personal injury lawyer, I see the consequences of poor choices on the water, so at the beginning of the season this is a great time to remind ourselves of some basic safety measures."

The US Coast Guard Boating Safety Resource Center compiles yearly statistics on recreational boating accidents. Last year, there were over 4,500 boating accidents, resulting in greater than 700 deaths and approximately $50 million in property damage. Factors such as operator inattention and inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and alcohol use were major contributors to boating accidents. Drowning caused most deaths resulting from boating accidents, and of those victims, more than 80 percent did not wear life jackets.

Boating accidents, like many causes of personal injury, are preventable. Boating is an activity that has the potential to harm many people if carried out irresponsibly. Therefore safety should be emphasized, as it could be the difference between life and death. May 19-25 is recognized by the National Safe Boating Council ("NSBC") as National Safe Boating week. Organizations like NSBC and the American Boating Association ("ABA") stress the issue of boating safety year-round and work to inform the public about how to responsibly enjoy this widely popular recreational activity.

These organizations encourage everyone to take the issue of boating safety seriously. New and experienced boaters alike should seek out the appropriate kind and amount of training for the type of boating they will be doing. The ABA urges people to "BESAFE" by knowing their:

  • Boat
  • Equipment
  • Safety devices and PFDs
  • Alcohol limits
  • First aid and emergency procedures and
  • Environment (area and weather)

Adhering to simple guidelines such as these can help save lives and promote safe waterways for all boaters to enjoy.
