Richmond Fed Publication Examines Corporate Bankruptcy

RICHMOND, VA--(Marketwire - April 28, 2009) - When a corporation enters bankruptcy court, the decision to liquidate the firm or not should be based on whether the company is no longer a viable business or if it has just fallen on hard times temporarily. But answering that question is often more difficult than it sounds. The cover story of this issue of Region Focus weighs the costs and benefits of the current corporate bankruptcy system and how it might be made more efficient.

Also in this issue:

-- Minor League Ballpark Boom. Since 2005, four minor league baseball parks have opened in the Fifth District. Can these ballparks deliver the promised boost to economic activity in their respective cities?

-- Heading to Carolina. People are moving less frequently these days. But that hasn't stopped the Carolinas from ranking among the fastest-growing states in the United States last year.

-- The Market for Local News. While many big metro dailies are floundering, community newspapers seem to be weathering the storm.

Region Focus, a quarterly business magazine published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, covers the economy and business activities of the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and most of West Virginia.
