Richmond Visitor's Guide Features Jun Kaneko Exhibit

Impressive Exhibit Provides Impressive Display for Museum's New Sculpture Garden

GLEN ALLEN, VA--(Marketwire - December 22, 2010) - The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a great place to discover the magnificent world of art, both past and present, as it brings to Virginia unique collections and world class exhibitions. As featured in the Richmond travel guide, the unique works of Jun Kaneko are currently on display at the museum and are a great reason for a winter vacation in Richmond.

The works of Kaneko have been selected for the museum's inaugural exhibition in the new E. Claiborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden for their sensational physical presence and stunning beauty. Connecting with the history of monumental public sculpture, ancient Shinto concepts, traditional ceramic techniques and industrial manufacturing processes, the pieces stand eight- to nine-feet tall and include one of Kaneko's monumental heads and at least eight of his dangos, which resemble totem-like forms. The exhibit, on display through Feb. 27, is a unique example of Kaneko's work which is included in more than 70 museum collections.

Kaneko is an internationally renowned Japanese-American master ceramicist based in Omaha, NE. Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1942, Kaneko came to the United States in 1963 to study painting at the Chouinard Institute of Art in Los Angeles where he developed his interest in sculptural ceramics. He has taught in leading art schools across the United States and his work appears in many international solo and group exhibitions each year.
