Rio Salado College, City of Phoenix Partnering to Open Green Learning Campus

TEMPE, AZ--(Marketwire - August 31, 2009) - On Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at 7:30 a.m. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Rio Salado College President Linda Thor will unveil plans for a Green Learning Campus and Higher Education Center, which will house one of the nation's first green charter high schools at Rio Salado's Seventh Avenue site, 619 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix.

Rio Salado College and the City of Phoenix have partnered to create a new prototype in education, which will add two new sustainable green schoolhouses with 7,000 square-feet of classroom space to the site. The existing buildings will be retrofitted to make them sustainable and environmentally responsible. The charter high school is slated to open in the fall of 2010.

The Green Learning Campus will address the educational needs of adults and high school students with a curriculum focus on improving the environment and using energy more efficiently.

"Some students will receive both high school and college credit through dual enrollment," said Rio Salado College President Linda Thor. "By the time they graduate, students will be well on their way to earning an associate degree."

The greenhouses will be the first structures in the nation built through the nonprofit organization Brighten a Life as part of its Green Schoolhouse series. Brighten a Life's local consultants, Cause and Effect, plan to obtain donations from sponsors to cover the cost of building materials.
