SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - February 22, 2011) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced that it will host the fourth annual SHARKFEST '11 conference at Stanford University, June 13-16, 2011. SHARKFEST, started in 2007, is an annual educational and training conference with the purpose of bringing together users of Wireshark, a packet and network analyzer, and the open source development communities that support and develop Wireshark and other network-related open source tools. Riverbed® recently acquired CACE Technologies, Inc. and is the new sponsor of the Wireshark open source development project. As sponsor, Riverbed is committed to continuing the strong, independent and community-driven nature of Wireshark.

SHARKFEST is a three-day gathering of instruction, knowledge transfer, and sharing of the latest information on network analysis, security and troubleshooting technology in both the open source and commercial arena. Attendees include developers of Wireshark and other network-related open source tools, IT professionals, computer science students and teachers, security and network consultants, network engineers, veteran network analysis trainers, and personal users. Participants benefit from a rich educational experience that enhances and extends their use of Wireshark and other open source tools to enrich their data analysis experience and optimize their existing network infrastructure.

Steve McCanne, co-founder and chief technology officer at Riverbed and co-creator of tcpdump, will deliver the keynote address "The Architecture and Optimization Methodology of the libpcap Packet Capture Library" at SHARKFEST 2011 on Tuesday, June 14 at 9:00 am. In his talk, Mr. McCanne will discuss the development and evolution of the network monitoring tool tcpdump, the BSD packet filter BPF, and the packet capture library libpcap. In addition, he will describe in-depth the novel packet filter optimization techniques embedded in libpcap

"Since 2007, SHARKFEST has provided an opportunity for the people that make up the Wireshark community to gather together and learn how experts tackle the challenges of packet-level network monitoring and troubleshooting," said Gerald Combs, director of open source projects at Riverbed, and original author of the Wireshark source code. "The Wireshark community is made up of an amazing ecosystem of developers and users, and SHARKFEST enables us to meet face-to-face and collaborate on how to more efficiently manage network traffic with the Wireshark tool."
