Riverbed Joins OpenStack Community

Optimization Pioneer to Collaborate in the Development of Open Source Standards-Based Solutions for the Cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 31, 2011) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced it has joined the OpenStack™ community, a global community of developers collaborating on cloud architecture and an open source cloud operating system. As organizations move their data and applications to the cloud, connectivity over the wide area network (WAN) increasingly poses a challenge to the performance of the applications. As a member of OpenStack, Riverbed® is working to add OpenStack support to its WAN optimization solutions to enable successful cloud environments.

Collaboration with the OpenStack community with Riverbed WAN optimization solutions is an expansion of the company's prior collaboration with the OpenStack community relating to its virtual application delivery controller (vADC). Riverbed WAN optimization solutions and vADCs give organizations a technology solution for enabling IT performance in public, private and hybrid cloud environments.

"We believe that it is best to join with leaders from across the IT industry to collaborate on open source technologies that benefit the community and cloud computing. Taking this approach will help cloud computing grow to meet the challenges of tomorrow's applications," said Mark Collier, vice president of Rackspace Cloud Builders.

More than 16,000 organizations worldwide depend on Riverbed to understand, optimize and consolidate their IT infrastructure, through solutions that overcome performance issues caused by distance, distributed computing, and ever increasing amounts of data. As IT organizations embark on strategic initiatives to virtualize, consolidate and migrate workloads into cloud environments, users move farther from their data, and slow applications, file transfers and inefficient websites negatively impact the performance of these initiatives. Riverbed transforms IT performance by providing solutions spanning WAN optimization, application-aware network performance management (NPM), application delivery, web content optimization (WCO), and cloud data protection for backup, archive and disaster recovery. By providing the broadest portfolio of performance solutions that deliver anywhere, any application optimization, Riverbed enables organizations to increase productivity and efficiency, while enhancing business resilience and controlling costs.

"Today's applications in the cloud are expected to consistently deliver an excellent user experience, regardless of connectivity and location. Riverbed works closely with its customer base to develop solutions that address performance challenges as more organizations move to cloud environments," said Venugopal Pai, vice president of global alliances at Riverbed. "As a member of OpenStack, Riverbed will help with the design, specification and development of this open source cloud stack to deliver integrations of cloud optimization technologies for the needs of tomorrow's applications. Joining OpenStack strengthens Riverbed's commitment to global organizations that strive to deliver applications in public, private and hybrid cloud environments without compromising performance."
