Riverbed to Present on Improving Cloud Performance at Cloud Connections Conference

Riverbed to Present on Tools and Techniques for Cloud Performance Optimization; Virtualization's Impact on the Cloud; and the Evolving Role of System Admins in Companies That Turn to the Cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 11, 2011) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced its participation at the Cloud Connections Conference taking place April 17-21, 2011 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, NV. Cloud Connections brings together business decision makers, IT managers and directors, and developers to explore cloud computing services and products, deepen technical skills, and determine best-practices solutions for implementing private or public cloud infrastructure and services. At the conference, Riverbed® technical leader Steve Riley will share tools and techniques for cloud performance optimization for globally connected enterprises; discuss how virtualization is driving cloud computing; and share thoughts on how the role of system administrators needs to evolve as enterprises move to the cloud.

More than 9,200 organizations worldwide, across a wide range of markets, depend on Riverbed to understand, optimize and consolidate their IT infrastructure. Riverbed delivers hardware, software and virtualized solutions that overcome performance issues caused by distance, distributed computing, and ever increasing amounts of data. Virtualization, consolidation and cloud computing promise huge cost savings and improved efficiencies, but as users move farther from their data, slow applications and file transfers can stall these strategic initiatives. Riverbed delivers to the remote office and mobile workers the same "local" performance, no matter where the private data center or public cloud may be. Riverbed continues building on its success in the wide area network (WAN) optimization and network application performance visibility markets with new and innovative solutions for access to applications and data deployed in the public cloud and accelerating cloud storage.

Riverbed recently announced two new products for applications and storage in public cloud environments. Riverbed Cloud Steelhead™ accelerates the process of migrating data and applications to the public cloud, and accelerates access to that data and those applications from anywhere. Additionally, the Riverbed Whitewater™ appliance provides organizations with a fast, secure and cost-efficient method to seamlessly integrate cloud storage into their existing backup environment and disaster recovery strategies. With these new solutions, Riverbed helps deliver flexible, accelerated performance without requiring IT organizations to make changes to their current infrastructure.

To gain insight on determining the best approach for optimizing performance in cloud environments; how virtualization is driving cloud computing; and how system administrators need to evolve as enterprises adapt to cloud environments, conference-goers can attend the following sessions featuring Mr. Riley:

What: Optimizing Cloud Performance

The rapid growth of public and private cloud computing, and the simultaneous proliferation of portable content creation tools and ubiquitous wireless connectivity, are placing enormous pressures on network transport and storage. To get the most out of the emerging "distributed recentralization" now occurring, IT departments, network operators, and businesses of all sizes will need to consider technology options that accelerate data transmission and reduce data amounts. These technologies bring many benefits, including improving user experiences, retaining more customers, and saving money on bandwidth and storage costs. Steve Riley will talk about performance and availability challenges of cloud computing and describe the business and technical advantages achieved through optimization and acceleration techniques.

There's a lot of chatter that cloud computing is yet another return to the age of centralization -- as if it were the mainframe of the 21st century. Nothing could be further from the truth. While the cloud is certainly evoking a kind of re-centralization of compute and storage, it's more accurate to regard it as "distributed recentralization." Access, meanwhile, is as far from centralized as you can imagine: with nearly ubiquitous access from devices of all sizes (often personally owned and equipped with huge storage capacities), traditional approaches to developing applications, managing systems, and securing information simply have to go. For the "digital native" generation, the cloud is the computer. There's no time for old-time lamentations about the good old days. To succeed today, you have to develop, manage and secure for tomorrow.
