Riverbed to Showcase IT Performance Solutions at Interop Las Vegas 2011

Riverbed and Its Customers to Present on Cloud Performance and WAN Optimization; Riverbed to Host Cloud Contest at Interop

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - May 4, 2011) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced its participation at Interop Las Vegas 2011 taking place May 8 - 12 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Interop is the leading business technology event series that offers in-depth educational programs, workshops, real-world demonstrations and live technology implementations.

To provide additional insight on Riverbed® solutions and benefits, Riverbed customers will present on their real-world WAN optimization experience and results at the Riverbed booth (#1927). In addition, Riverbed customer Ben Bailey, director of information technology, at Applied Voice and Speech Technology (AVST), will speak during the CIO Boot Camp and will present a case study on the benefits the company has seen from acceleration of its cloud storage environment. Riverbed technical leader Steve Riley will participate in discussions on hybrid cloud computing performance and expanded wide area network (WAN) optimization delivery methods. Also, Riverbed will host the Speed the Cloud Contest, a guessing game, for a chance to win a $500 Apple gift card and other prizes.

More than 13,000 organizations worldwide, across a wide range of markets, depend on Riverbed to understand, optimize and consolidate their IT infrastructure. Riverbed delivers appliance-based and virtualized solutions that overcome performance issues caused by distance, distributed computing, and ever increasing amounts of data. Virtualization, consolidation and cloud computing promise huge cost savings and improved efficiencies, but as users move farther from their data, slow applications and file transfers can stall these strategic initiatives. Riverbed delivers to the remote office and mobile workers the same "local area network (LAN)-like" performance, no matter where the private data center or public cloud may be. Riverbed continues building on its success in the WAN optimization and network application performance visibility markets with new and innovative solutions for accelerating cloud storage and access to applications and data deployed in the public cloud.

At the Riverbed booth, attendees can learn how Riverbed IT performance solutions enable the globally connected enterprise, accelerate disaster recovery (DR), enable IT consolidation with public, private and hybrid clouds, and provide enterprise-wide network and application visibility, all while eliminating the need to increase bandwidth, storage or servers.

Riverbed Booth Presentations: Customers Discuss IT Performance Solutions
Hear directly from Riverbed customers -- including AVST, a developer of Unified Communications solutions; Pacific Dental Services, a managed dental care provider; and Psomas, an engineering consulting firm -- as they present how they can better understand, optimize and consolidate their IT infrastructure with Riverbed solutions.

Conference attendees can also attend the following sessions:

What: Case Study: Developing Disaster Recovery in the Cloud
Who: Ben Bailey, director of information technology, AVST
Thomas Bakewell, CIO, Riverbed
When: Monday, May 9, 1:00 - 1:30 PM
Where: CIO Boot Camp, Room South Seas D
Ben Bailey, director of information technology at AVST, will discuss transitioning from tape-based to cloud-based backup and recovery as an important step in enhancing the company's overall disaster recovery program. As a result of the strategic move, Bailey will illustrate how backing up to the cloud allowed AVST to gain control over a 70 percent rate of growth in data volume per year, reduce weekend backup times by 35 - 40 percent, improve data restore times by nearly 30 percent and significantly reduce both operating and capital expenses.

What: Enterprise Cloud Summit: Optimizing Hybrid Cloud Communication
Who: Steve Riley, technical leader, Riverbed
When: Monday, May 9, 3:35 - 4:05 PM
Where: Room South Seas B
It's unlikely that clouds are an all-or-nothing affair, at least in the short term. Companies will blend on-premises and on-demand clouds into what some call a hybrid model, combining the control of machines you own with the flexibility of those you merely rent. But a distributed architecture has its own problems -- particularly reliability. In this panel, learn about the challenges of a "stretched cloud" and how technology can help mitigate performance issues when workloads happen at a distance.

What: The New Age of WAN Optimization
Who: Steve Riley, technical leader, Riverbed
When: Thursday, May 12, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Where: Room Breakers L
Driven largely by the deployment of chatty protocols and the need to transmit large files, many IT organizations have implemented network and application optimization functionality. The traditional approach to doing this is for the IT organization to implement WAN optimization controller (WOC) functionality or to obtain it as part of a managed service. While those options still exist, new options are emerging. This includes obtaining network and application optimization functionality from a SaaS provider or by using WAN services that have embedded optimization functionality. The panelists in this session will debate the pros and cons of the various approaches to provide insight on how to refine an optimization strategy.

Flex Your IT Skills and Guess How Fast is the Cloud
During Interop, Riverbed invites participants to submit a guess for the length of time it will take to download a 50MB file -- with Microsoft SharePoint both "unoptimized" without Riverbed and optimized by Riverbed -- from a cloud provider in Virginia to the Riverbed booth at Interop Las Vegas. For a chance at winning a $500 Apple gift card, participants will submit their guesses via Twitter using the hashtag #speedthecloud. On Thursday, May 12, Riverbed will perform a live document download, and announce the winner whose guess is closest to the actual file download time. More information is available at
