Riverbed's Steelhead Appliance Receives Positive Evaluation by ICSA Labs

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - February 20, 2008) - Riverbed Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon Business, has completed an evaluation of its Riverbed® Steelhead® Appliance for Secure Socket Layer Transport Layer Security (SSL-TLS) to determine its vulnerability to attack.

"Riverbed has shown a high level of diligence by having ICSA Labs evaluate the Riverbed Steelhead appliance," said George Japak, managing director for ICSA Labs. "ICSA Labs reviewed the security capabilities of the Steelhead appliance and based on the testing completed, we found that the appliance was not vulnerable to exploitation or attack, and functioned as intended."

According to the ICSA Labs evaluation report, Riverbed's Steelhead Appliance with SSL-TLS protocol optimization technology provides strong protection for customers and does not introduce other vulnerabilities to the existing network or compromise existing security controls. SSL-TLS technology is a key component of a comprehensive enterprise security strategy and helps companies secure their network communications.

"We've delivered one of the first SSL optimization tools to market that does not compromise the enterprise trust model," said Eric Wolford, senior vice president, marketing and business development at Riverbed. "ICSA Labs' evaluation provides valuable feedback on the Riverbed approach to SSL acceleration."

WDS accelerates applications and data for remote offices, data centers and mobile workers across wide-area networks (WANs), enabling them to run up to 100 times faster. With the release of Riverbed Operating System (RiOS™) 4.0 in March 2007, Riverbed introduced its ability to accelerate encrypted (SSL) traffic, using Riverbed's algorithms to deliver LAN-like performance for those key business applications.

Riverbed has the only solution to safely improve the performance or responsiveness of SSL WAN traffic other than off-loading it using an Application Front End (AFE) or other "SSL Offload" products. While alternative offerings are still appropriate to help scale SSL application deployments, they don't offer the dramatic acceleration that Riverbed customers are accustomed to with their non-encrypted applications.

Riverbed is one of the first companies to introduce true SSL acceleration that does not require the distribution of certificates or private keys to the edge, while enabling SSL traffic to be decrypted, optimized, and then re-encrypted before moving onto the WAN. When traffic reaches the other side of the network, the same process is repeated: decryption, decoding, and then re-encryption for delivery to the client. These optimizations are bi-directional ensuring that all traffic is encrypted end-to-end from client to server, to, or from branch offices.

Some other symmetric acceleration solutions may claim to accelerate encrypted traffic, but they require the distribution of certificates or private keys to the branch office, which introduces significant security vulnerabilities, and is not acceptable to most IT architects.
