Riverside Medical Center Receives Full Heart Failure Accreditation

KANKAKEE, IL--(Marketwire - December 22, 2010) - Riverside Medical Center was recently recognized as one of only two hospitals in Illinois and one of just 22 hospitals in the United States to receive full Heart Failure Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC).

Riverside Medical Center successfully demonstrated its protocol-driven and systematic approach to patient management. This approach allows physicians to reduce time to treatment and assess the risk levels of heart failure patients in order to decrease their stay.

"Being one of such a select group of hospitals to earn full Heart Failure accreditation really demonstrates Riverside's unending commitment to providing exceptional care to our patients and the community," said Kevin Hack, Riverside Medical Center director of emergency services.

To achieve SCPC Heart Failure Accreditation, Riverside met or exceeded a wide set of strict criteria including quality measures that improve the process of care for heart failure patients, integration with emergency medical services, personnel competencies and training throughout the system.

Other key areas measured included:

  • Emergency assessment of patients with symptoms of acute decompensated heart failure-diagnosis
  • Analysis of risk level of heart failure patient
  • Treatment for patients presenting to the emergency department in heart failure
  • Heart failure discharge criteria from the emergency department, observation stay or inpatient stay
  • Heart Failure patient education in the emergency department, observation and inpatient unit

Statistics show that heart failure is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and approximately five million patients in the U.S. have heart failure. In addition, heart failure is responsible for 12 to 15 million physician visits per year and 6.5 million hospitalizations annually.
